S S Stewart 5 String Banjo Circa 1890-91

S S Stewart 5 String Banjo Circa 1890-91
An Antique S S Stewart 5 String Banjo.
it has a 10 inch rim showing a diagonal cut rosewood on the inside spun over with nickel plated brass it has a calf skin head which is old, possibly original.
The tailpiece is original but is without the bone decoration.
One hook and nut is British pattern the other 19 and the tail piece nut appear to be original.
The scale 24 3/16" it has a Mahogany neck with Ebony fingerboard, heel and head stock overlays.
The head stock star and 10 fret diamond are abalone, the other neck marker dots are mother of pearl.
The is a very old and soundly repaired neck crack under the top nut just visible in the back of the head stock photo.
The instrument came with an additional rim brace in mahogany which has been retained.
The original friction tuners had been replaced with ill fitting metal friction tuners which have been replace with orbital gear tuners.
It is fitted with steel strings and is currently tuned aDAC#E, it plays well with a bright sound, it would suit a two or three finger style as the strings are a bit close to the head for most claw hammer players.
