Dobson 7 String Flush Fret Banjo

This seven string banjo was made by Henry C Dobson, New York, USA, for the British importer Alfred Hays of London, England.

The neck is Mahogany with wood frets (maple?) flush with the finger board surface, there are small mother of pearl dots for position markers. It is fitted with a matching set violin style friction tuner pegs with decorative mother of pearl dots.

The inside of the rim is hard wood finished in black lacquer, it is spun over with nickel plated brass, it has a spun Dobson 1887 patent  "dough nut" pattern tone ring.  The tailpiece is marked patented 1891.

The instrument is set up with nylon and and nickel wound nylon strings.

Most of the hooks appear to be original nickel plated brass, 2 are Stew Mac replacements, all the nuts have been replaced with a set of nickel plated brass nuts in a style similar to those used on banjos of this age. The nickel has worn through to the brass in some areas, mainly on the tension hoop and some hooks. A small crack in the tone ring has been repaired with what appears to be silver solder.
